Prediction: Google Offers will fail

Monday 11 June 2012 Leave a Comment

I just tried to use Google Offers to buy something ($100 massage for $50). Google Offers would only let me pay through Google Wallet. But I don’t use Google Wallet. So I went to turn Google Wallet on in my Google account, and it wouldn’t let me turn it on because it didn’t like the cookie settings in Google Chrome. I block cookies from third-party sites, which I believe is the default setting, but I added an exception to allow cookies from google.com, and it still didn’t work. No cookie settings approval means no Google Wallet, which means no Google Offers, which means no half-price massage.

This is not how a service works when its developers actually want it to succeed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Malcolm Gladwell himself is behind this.

Zappos shipping

Thursday 7 June 2012 Leave a Comment

Zappos gives me these four shipping options:

  • 1-Business Day Shipping – FREE!
  • Standard Shipping (4-5 business days) – FREE!
  • Priority Mail (3 or more business days) – $7.00
  • 2-Business Day Shipping – $15.00
  • So if I want to pay nothing, I can get it in one day. Or I could pay nothing and wait four or five days for it. And for those people who insist on paying for something that’s free, there’s the option to pay $15 for it to take twice as long, or $7 for at least three times as long.

I want to be a fly on the wall in the conference room where they come up with this.

Is it normal for a song written in 1967 and recorded in 1970 to have a music video?

Because this is one of my absolute favorites, and apparently it does, and it’s trippy and weird.

You should sign up for it. Stop what you’re doing right now and go to https://www.billguard.com/. It’s free and it’s a fantastic product.

    Useless Mug

    Useless Mug, by Marco Arment

One star review: “Can’t believe I wasted money on this crap. I use this mug every day and want to rate it 5 stars but it still doesn’t support Google Buzz. Emailed the developers 5 times already! Will update this review once they add it.”Marco Arment, developer of my beloved Instapaper – and, before that, of Tumblr – made this mug based on a real user review. The moral: don’t ever make the mistake of listening to what users say they want.

    Facebook Privacy Disclaimer

    Tuesday 5 June 2012 Leave a Comment

You know how some of your more gullible facebook friends have been posting a status that they think will protect their data from being accessed now that facebook is a publicly-traded company? Your friends are kind of being idiots. Elinor Mills on CNET:

If you’ve been on Facebook this week, you may have seen a status update now making the rounds that purports to explain how to safeguard your privacy on the service. Which sounds great, but for one thing: It’s pretty much bogus… Pretty much everything about the message is inaccurate or misleading… Facebook users — like those of any other site — can’t simply override the site’s Terms of Use agreement with an after-the-fact disclaimer like this one.

Summary: this status is a chain letter, and if you don’t like Facebook’s terms of service, go vote to have them changed or stop using the site.
